The Share the Space campaign, a behavioural change initiative coordinated by the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC), has been successfully promoted throughout Perth’s Eastern Region over the last six weeks. With a focus on inspiring compassion for others, particularly those who are using mobility equipment in shared spaces, the program will continue to provide long-lasting important messaging to all road and path users.
EMRC CEO Marcus Geisler explained that the campaign’s intention is to increase awareness of behaviour to improve the use of shared paths, roads, trails in a safe and enjoyable manner.
‘A recent fatal tragedy in Perth caused by a collision between a bus and a cyclist is a sad reminder that awareness is crucial when using shares spaces. Now, more than ever this campaign reiterates importance of safety on the road and in shared spaces,’ said Mr Geisler.
‘Safety is a shared responsibility and the community has definitely interacted and shared the campaign with friends and family to spread the word. One of our campaign videos has reached more than 9.4K views and it is remarkable to see how the community is appreciating the Share the Space campaign as it develops.
‘Providing a safe, efficient and well-connected transport network in Perth's Eastern Region, where all users feel secure, is a priority for the EMRC, as defined in EMRC’s Regional Integrated Transport Strategy.’
The Share the Space campaign has been successfully recognised and endorsed by eight Local Government Councils around Perth, including the Town of Bassendean, City of Bayswater, City of Belmont, City of Kalamunda, Shire of Mundaring, City of Swan, Town of Victoria Park and the City of Canning.
Mr Geisler added, ‘It is a great success to have the campaign endorsed by all of these Councils. Together our aim is to improve road safety by inspiring compassion for others, raising awareness of behaviour and highlighting road rules and footpath etiquette all around the Region.’
