EMRC CEO Marcus Geisler, launching the Share the Space campaign, explained its intention is to start conversations around behaviours that could help all users share paths, roads, trails in a safe and enjoyable manner.
‘The campaign’s key messages are to inspire compassion for others, particularly those with disabilities or aged stature, to improve road safety, to raise awareness of behaviour and highlight a number of road rules and footpath etiquette,’ Mr Geisler said.
‘When we interact in shared spaces, particularly with different types of transport, we can misunderstand the good intentions of others or demonstrate behaviour that causes confusion or frustration.
‘New mobility equipment including gophers, electric skateboards, electric bikes and scooters are rapidly influencing how the roads and paths are being used,’ he added.
The Share the Space campaign will be delivered through a series of online videos grouped under four headings, showing different scenarios where misunderstandings of road rules and footpath etiquette can impact on the safety and enjoyment of others.
The four online video headings are:
The campaign has been endorsed by the EMRC’s member Councils: Town of Bassendean, City of Bayswater, City of Belmont and the Shire of Mundaring. It addresses several priorities identified in the EMRC’s Regional Road Safety Plan and Regional Integrated Transport Strategy.
‘Providing a safe, efficient and effective transport network in Perth's Eastern Region, where all active transport, road and public transport users feel safe, is a priority for the EMRC. Remember: no matter the case, share the space!’ Mr Geisler said.
